1-naphthol (including α -naphthol ) is an organic chemical compound. The structure consists of a naphthalene with an added hydroxyl group ( -OH). It can therefore also be described as one - Hydroxynaphthalene. There is an isomer, the 2- naphthol ( β -naphthol, 2- Hydroxynaphthalene ).

Use

Under the action of a strong acid, such as concentrated sulfuric acid, 5 - hydroxymethyl furfural formed from pentoses and hexoses by intramolecular dehydration and furfural. This condensed with 1 -naphthol to form a violet dye ( Molisch test ).
