  • December 20: The King Henry III. convened the Synod of Sutri begins. Pope Gregory VI. given the opportunity to defend himself against the charge of simony. The Synod also advises on reform issues.
  • December 24: King Henry III. sets in Rome three simultaneously reigning Popes Gregory VI. , Benedict IX. and Silvester III. , and appoints from the Germans Suitger of Bamberg as the new Pope. This is considered the first pope reform.
