1,1-dichloroethane ( Ethylidendichlorid ) is an oily, colorless and highly flammable liquid with a mild, sweet, chloroformartigem odor. This chemical compound is one of the chlorofluorocarbons. In 1,1-dichloroethane, both chlorine atoms on the same carbon atom are bonded, in contrast to 1,2-dichloroethane.

PREPARATION AND USE
1,1-dichloroethane is mostly produced from vinyl chloride by addition of HCl. It is an electrophilic addition by Markovnikov.
1,1-dichloroethane is used to produce solvents and extractants for specific purposes. Previously it was used as a surgical anesthetic. It is also used to dissolve compounds, such as paint or varnish, and to remove fat. 1,1-dichloroethane is part of many packaging materials and plastic packaging.
