(124 ) Alceste is an asteroid of the main asteroid belt, which was discovered on August 23, 1872 by Christian Heinrich Friedrich Peters.

It was named after celestial bodies Alcestis, a female figure from Greek mythology who sacrificed herself for her husband, but was dismissed by Persephone back from the underworld.

Alceste varies between 2.4 ( perihelion ) astronomical units to 2.8 astronomical units ( aphelion ) in 4,265 years of the sun. The orbit is inclined 3.0 ° to the ecliptic, the orbital eccentricity is 0.08.

Alceste has a diameter of 76 km. It has a bright, silicate- rich surface with an albedo of 0.17. In about 9 hours and 55 minutes to rotate around its own axis.
