Purpurin is a naturally occurring chemical compound and belongs Flavopurpurin and Anthrapurpurin to Alizarinfarbstoffen. Purpurin occurs next to alizarin in the madder root. It is shown from artificial alizarin by oxidation with manganese dioxide and sulfuric acid, but plays a minor role (for use in calico printing, chrome paint and purple) as a dye.
