( 12444 ) Prothoon is an asteroid from the group of Jupiter Trojans, which was discovered on April 15, 1996 by EW Elst at the European Southern Observatory. As Jupiter trojans are asteroids that run on the path of Jupiter on the Lagrange points around the sun.

Was named the asteroid after Prothoon, a warrior of Aeneas in the Trojan War.
