- NOVEMBER 8: The Democrat Grover Cleveland, who was elected out of office four years ago, defeated in the presidential election in the United States, the Republican incumbent Benjamin Harrison and James B. Weaver of the Populist Party. He pulls so as so far only U.S. president a second time to the White House.

- January 4: The Berlin Illustrirte newspaper brings its first edition on the market.
- March 15: Jesse W. Reno receives the patent, the patent for his escalator.
- April 15: By merger of two predecessor companies, the General Electric Company, headquartered in Schenectady, New York is created.

- November 5: In Berlin, an exhibition of paintings by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch is opened, triggering a scandal and led to the founding of the Berlin Secession.
