Devastation caused by the tsunami

The Meiji- Sanriku earthquake (Japanese明治 三 陆 地震, Meiji Sanriku jishin ) 1896 ( Meiji 29) occurred on 15 June off the coast of Japan by about 19:32 local time. About half an hour later arrived up to 25 m high tsunami on the Sanriku coast on the northeastern part of the island of Honshu. About 27,000 people were killed.

In California, the tsunami reached up to 3 m high.
