1951 Swiss Grand Prix

The Grand Prix of Switzerland took place in 1951 on the Bremgarten circuit instead.

Background

The ratios at the first World Cup race of the new season changed towards the final stages of last season little. Furthermore, the Alfa Romeo and Ferrari certain the scenery. Alfa Romeo had installed on the vehicle by Farina an auxiliary tank with a capacity of 225 liters, which made refueling superfluous and so one of the biggest shortcomings of the last season equalizer away. The Swiss de Graffenried and Consalvo Sanesi completed the team. Ferrari went back to Ascari and Villoresi with a third car drove Piero Taruffi. Ascari drove the new Ferrari 375 with 4.5 -liter naturally aspirated engine, but was still handicapped by fire injuries he had suffered a week earlier at a race in Genoa. Two private Ferrari reported with the Swiss Rudolf Fischer ( 2.5 -liter Formula 2 car ) and the British Peter Whitehead ( 1.5 liter car with compressor) were at the start. The French Talbot -Lago were indeed well represented with six vehicles, but had little chance of keeping up with the Italians, especially since they had their vehicles over the previous year hardly developed. The field has been supplemented by the two British HWM one of which took Stirling Moss, who made his Formula 1 debut here.

Training

The training took place under completely dry conditions. Villoresi took advantage of his chance to be No. 1 at the Ferrari and put his car with 2:39,3 min in the front row. In the first session he had even traveled fastest time, but these could not compete with the Alfa Romeo of Farina and Fangio in the second session. Fangio started with a time of 2:35,9 min from pole position, Farina was 1.9 seconds slower. Ascari could only get a seat in the third row.

Race

On race day it began to rain heavily. The organizers allowed the drivers therefore to shoot a round of inspections to familiarize yourself with the new conditions.

Despite the poor visibility came with the exception of Shepherd, who stood with his Veritas Meteor at the start, all the drivers healing from the first lap. Front were the three Alfa Romeo Fangio at the top front of Farina and Sanesi, followed by Villoresi, the Sanesi could overtake after five rounds. In the 13th round came on, however, the Villoresi off, as he could not see anything in the spray one before him moving, lapped Talbots and landed in the forest house curve in a hedge. He was uninjured. Taruffi came contrast well with the conditions. After the first round, ninth, he first overtook the private Ferrari of Whitehead and Fischer, was then vorgewunken from the driving under pain Ascari, passed successively de Graffenried and Sanesi and caught up with Farina.

In the 31 lap Louveau Henry broke his leg when his vehicle overturned. Peter Whitehead came six laps later it in an accident in the same curve with minor injuries.

Fangio drove unchallenged at the top of the field with the exception of 24-28 rounds, than by his pit stop behind Farina it - this took the extra tank and did not have to refuel - was thrown back and won the race by almost a minute ahead. Behind Taruffi Farina could displace two laps to go from second place and dissociate him at this time still to 24 seconds. Stirling Moss was in his Formula 1 debut in eighth place.
