1952 Dutch Grand Prix

The Grand Prix of the Netherlands in 1952 took place on 17 August at the circuit of Zandvoort and was the seventh of eight races of the Formula 1 season 1952.

Background

It is true that Grand Prix at Zandvoort was played in the past three years, but 1952 was the first time that the race world championship status attained. Compared to the race at Silverstone and the Nürburgring, the number of 18 responses was low in this case, but with Ferrari, Gordini, Cooper - Bristol, Connaught and the main participants were all represented. At Ferrari -again Villoresi Piero Taruffi replaced. Villoresi had been injured in a traffic accident earlier this year. Gordini came with three cars for Behra, Trintignant and Manzon on, and Connaught Cooper seconded only ever a vehicle for Mike Hawthorn and Ken Downing. The Maserati factory team was again not at the start.

Training

The training was, as usual, dominated by the Ferrari drivers Ascari and Farina, with Ascari with 1:46,5 min secured the pole position. Hawthron could surprisingly keep up with the Cooper and secured the remaining space in the front row before the third Ferrari Villoresi.

Race

The race offered only in the early rounds some variety. Ascari won the start, but Hawthron could for two laps before claiming Farina. In the fourth round he then fell back even behind Villoresi, so that the three Ferrari took the first three places and - as usual - enteilten the field. Hawthron but was able to secure his fourth place ahead of the rest of the field. Most overtaking move Stirling Moss, who had fought his way to the inferior ERA by a starting place in the last row to the eighth round to the seventh position. However, in the 73rd round, he was forced to retire with engine failure. Behra had parked his Gordini already in the 10th round with a defective ignition. The leading Ferraris gave this position to the finish no longer from and thus secured again a triple success. Points default, this had no impact on Ascari, as he had already reached the last race, the maximum possible score for a driver in one season.
