For the Soccer World Cup 1958 in Sweden a total of 52 teams were reported, including

  • 29 teams from Europe, with Cyprus and Turkey were still expected to Asia
  • 2 teams from Africa
  • 7 teams from Asia ( 4 from the Near and 3 from the Far East)
  • 8 teams from South America and
  • 6 teams from North and Central America

From Oceania again reported no team. The total entry of 52 meant a new record. As defending champions West Germany and Sweden organizers were directly qualified and the World Cup was held with 16 teams were available for the remaining 50 teams 14 free finals spaces available.

The 16 World Cup places were distributed as follows:

* In Africa / Asia qualifiers came in the tournament to a politically motivated withdrawal of three teams, so that Israel was declared the winner without a fight. However, in order not to let the Israelis go without qualifying match for the World Cup, they were with Wales associated with a burning enemy who was drawn from the group runners- European groups. Since the Welsh were able to prevail, the number of European qualifiers increased to ten.

Europe / UEFA

The 27 European national teams played for nine free World Cup places. The teams were divided into nine groups of three teams. The group winners qualified for the World Cup. South America / CONMEBOL

Eight South American national teams competed for three free World Cup places. The teams were divided into two groups of three teams and one group of two teams. The group winners qualified for the World Cup finals. In case of equality in the first place decided not goals, but there was a playoff on neutral ground.

North and Central America / CONCACAF

From North and Central America participated in a total of six teams battling for a qualifying place. The teams were initially divided into two groups of three and played in home and away matches against each group opponent. Mexico and Costa Rica were able to push through in their groups and then also played in home and away leg the World Cup participants. The team from Mexico could ultimately triumph.

Africa and Asia / CAF and AFC

Seven Asian and two African teams played to a free World Cup place. The teams were initially divided into three groups of two and a group with three teams. The group winners should then play the World Cup qualifiers in the final round. In group 1, the Taiwanese Football Association moved his team back before the start of the qualifiers. Subsequently, China and Indonesia played in Return game against each other. After both teams could each win their home games, a play-off was held on neutral ground. When this ended goalless, Indonesia was declared the winner on goal difference.

In groups 2 and 3 no match took place because both Turkey and Cyprus * not competed. The enemies of Israel or Egypt attracted by it without a fight in the final round.

The final round itself was overshadowed by the Middle East conflict, when Sudan and Egypt refused to play against Israel. Indonesia on the other hand just wanted to play on neutral ground, which FIFA declined. In order to still carry out the final round, an opponent of Israel was randomly assigned from the pool of runners of all other groups ( with Belgium and Uruguay waived ) with Wales. This could confidently assert in two games against the Israelis and leave as " Asian and African representatives " for the finals in Sweden.
