Background

A since the last World Championship race only slightly altered riders entered for the Grand Prix of Belgium on the then top speed track at Spa -Francorchamps.

Guy Ligier was after five GP participation in the previous year for the first time in the current season again with his private Cooper T81 at the start.

Training

Two weeks after winning the first use of the Lotus 49 by Jim Clark at the Grand Prix of the Netherlands the professional world was a little surprised when Clark again the pole position reached by a margin of about three seconds before Dan Gurney, the weekend before the 24 won -hour race of Le Mans. With Graham Hill, the second factory Lotus reached the front row.

Ferrari driver Chris Amon shared the second row with Cooper works driver Jochen Rindt. This was followed by Jackie Stewart, Jack Brabham and Mike Parkes.

Denis Hulme only reached the 14th place due to handling problems in the second factory Brabham.

Race

While with Jim Clark one of the two Lotus factory driver was able to implement the start from the front row in a guide, the second works car of Graham Hill could not start because of an initially weak battery. Hill had to take the race from the pit out. As Gurney interconnected at startup, Rindt, Stewart and Parkes were the first followers of the leading Clark.

Towards the end of the first round Parkes came on an oil track and crashed in the fast - BLANCHIMONT hard cornering. The leg injury suffered thereby sealed the end of his racing career. As a test driver and engineer, he was, however, still several years at Ferrari.

After Rindt had fallen slightly, Stewart moved into second place to the front, followed by Amon and Gurney, the increasingly caught up on the top.

After the twelfth round Clark and Gurney drove at the same time to the pit. Gurney did not stop, but informed his pit crew only about an impending failure. He returned behind Stewart in second place lying 15 seconds behind on the route back. Clark sorted after a brief repair in seventh place again.

Towards the end of the race, Stewart got problems with the gear shift. He needed the gear lever to hold in its respective position and therefore could draw only one hand. From this handicap benefited Gurney, who took the lead in lap 21 and eventually over a minute gained prominence.

It was Gurney's fourth and last Grand Prix victory and also the only of his own Eagle team.
