Background

Approximately two weeks after both Lotus factory cars were excreted during the Grand Prix of France at the head of the field lying because of identical gearbox problem, the team brought with appropriate modifications to Silverstone to avoid a repeat of this incident. Experts in the field was now clear that the Lotus 49 was actually the best car in the field, but so far due to various technical difficulties could not keep up with the successes of the Brabham - Repco reliable.

Formula 2 pilot Alan Rees graduated this weekend his first and only use in a Formula 1 race cars as a guest driver at the wheel of a third factory Cooper.

Training

In training, where reliability plays a subordinate role, Jim Clark and Graham Hill proved again, reflects the class of the Lotus - Ford. Clark was around one second faster than the two Brabham Jack Brabham and Denis Hulme, with whom he shared the Hill and consisting of four vehicles front row in his fastest qualifying lap.

Race

After Hill had his Lotus damaged in training, extensive repairs took place overnight, which were dealt with in good time to start.

Clark took the lead ahead of Hill. However, this was already obsolete in the second round of Brabham, while Clark was able to sell. Meanwhile needed Hulme nine rounds to reach its starting position to fourth place after a failed start.

Over the next few laps, Hill fought back past Brabham. A little later this was successfully Hulme, who then took up the pursuit of the two Lotus at the top.

In the 26th Round Hill could take the lead and defend it until the 55th lap before he had to go to the box due to a suspension damage and fell back. Ten laps later, he retired due to an engine failure definitively from the race.

Clark won ahead of Hulme and Amon, who was at the forefront in Brabham during the final laps.
