Background

Three weeks after the death of Lorenzo Bandini at Monaco joined the Formula 1 at the next World Cup race in the Netherlands. The committed by Ferrari as Bandini's successor Mike Parkes had won in the meantime, not for the World Cup scoring formula 1 race in Italy. His team-mate Ludovico Scarfiotti had completed a double victory, but this was facilitated by the fact that most of the usual competitors not competed since they simultaneously at the Indianapolis 500 took part. There, Dan Gurney had qualified for the front row. Ultimately, however, was Denis Hulme the only one participating Formula 1 pilot, who crossed the finish line in the rain for three days shifted race. He finished fourth. Due to the shift, the driver did not arrive until relatively short notice for the first free practice session at Zandvoort.

It has long been eagerly awaited, was this weekend's premiere of the new Lotus 49 and the new engine Ford Cosworth DFV 3.0 V8, while the other works teams Ferrari, BRM Eagle and each further inserting modified previous models.

Under the direction of the private teams Reg Parnell Racing was this weekend, the last Grand Prix use of the Lotus 25 with which Jim Clark won the World Cup in 1963.

Training

The new Lotus proved to be instantly recognizable as a competitive, which Graham Hill presented by reaching the pole position to the test. He undercut the fastest lap time of Dan Gurney by half and Jack Brabham to a full second. The second row of the grid was formed by the two Cooper factory drivers Jochen Rindt and Pedro Rodríguez. This was followed by John Surtees, Denis Hulme and Jim Clark in the third row.

Race

When the race was released, was one of the officials still in the starting lineup. This Hulme has prevented a good start. Hill took over the lead from Brabham and Gurney. At the end of the first lap he already had two seconds ahead of Brabham and the now third-placed Rindt and Gurney fourth. Due to an engine problem and a resulting pit stops Gurney fell out of the top group. Meanwhile, Clark overtook the Ferrari of Chris Amon and ran his hand under pressure from Hulme.

Brabham took the lead in the eleventh round after Hills Lotus had suddenly become slow and eventually eliminated. Clark fought in the 15th round of Rindt over to second place and went in the next round in the lead, which he did not relinquish it until the finish.

Jim Clark won with the new Ford - powered Lotus before the Brabham - Repco favorite of team founder and reigning world champion Jack Brabham and the leading in the world championship standings Denis Hulme.
