Background

As the venue for the Grand Prix of France, the then-new Bugatti circuit 1967 is selected, the famous start / finish line and the first long right curve of the course, only crossed the 24- hour race at Le Mans included. The remaining part of the route consisting of a sequence of most of tight curves, resulting in a relatively low average speed found. Since the course was well received neither the drivers nor the spectators, the track was only used this once for a Grand Prix.

Training

About one month after the first victory of the Lotus 49 Graham Hill drove the car one more time on the pole position. The car was fast, but over the race distance is still very unreliable.

The reigning world champion Jack Brabham and the winner of the previous World Cup race in Belgium, Dan Gurney, also qualified for the three- vehicle front row. This was followed by teammate Jim Clark Hills next to Bruce McLaren, who did not compete this weekend with his own car, but with a second Eagle as a teammate of Dan Gurney. The third row of the grid formed Denis Hulme in the second factory Brabham, Chris Amon in the only Ferrari, who came this weekend to use, as well as Cooper works driver Jochen Rindt.

Race

The first round ended Hill as the leader before he was overtaken by Brabham. One lap later, Clark walked past Gurney. The two Lotus factory cars overtook then successively on the reigning world champion.

In the fifth round Clark took the lead and Hill completed a double top for Team Lotus. In the eleventh round Hill took the lead shortly before he was forced to retire due to a differential damage. Nine laps later Clark was prevented because of the same problem on the continuation of the race, so Brabham regained the lead without a fight. Gurney and Amon were now his nearest rival, with the Ferrari Hulme little later overhauled and the third player in the sector. As Gurney in the 40th round had to give up because of a problem with the fuel supply, a Brabham -two lead, which eventually lasted until the finish line was.

Third place could not hold Amon due to a problem with the throttle linkage. Since Pedro Rodríguez was eliminated for technical reasons, ultimately, Jackie Stewart reached the podium. Chris Irwin in privately-entered BRM P83 of Reg Parnell team lost to fourth place until the fourth last round of the antretenden also in a non- factory- supported cars Jo Siffert. However, it was still counted as fifth despite the failure because of the distance traveled.
