Background

As in most previous years, the Grand Prix of Germany took place in the 1967 season on the 22.8 -mile Nürburgring Nordschleife. As usual, this was by far the longest track of the racing calendar.

Due to the rapid development of Formula 1 racing cars during the past twelve months we did not expect an increase in lap times compared to last year, although it had been integrated the so-called High Rain Chicane in the distance the car for safety reasons in range of boxes to slow down.

As a result of the length of the route only 15 laps were complete, we stopped on the field as in the previous year by some Formula 2 participants to offer viewers more entertainment value. These included with Jacky Ickx and Jackie Oliver two aspiring drivers who are well-known Formula 1 pilots were in the following years.

Hubert Hahne graduated this weekend a guest appearance in a Lola - BMW. Despite its two-liter engine, the car was not reported for Formula 2, but for Formula 1 and was thus entitled theoretical points.

For the first time the German television about wearing a Formula 1 race in color.

Training

Jim Clark graduated from the fastest practice lap more than nine seconds faster than the runner-up Denis Hulme. His own pole time last year undercutting Clark despite the inserted braking chicane at more than twelve seconds.

Jacky Ickx caused a stir by driving the third-best training time with his Formula 2 cars. Since the Formula 2 participants, however, were placed on the grid behind the Formula 1 car, he was only assigned to the 18th on the grid. Instead, the fourth fastest Jackie Stewart won the third place in the first row next to Clark and Hulme and the fifth- fastest Dan Gurney.

The second row of the grid was formed by Bruce McLaren, John Surtees and Jack Brabham.

Race

Jim Clark immediately took the lead. His team-mate Graham Hill, who started the race from 13th on the grid only after an accident in training, got on the grass next to the track and turned. He found himself then again at the end of the field.

Three laps led Clark to the race ahead of Hulme and Gurney, before he first was dramatically slower because of suspension damage and eventually had to give up. Gurney then took over the lead ahead of Hulme and Brabham. Behind the fourth-placed Stewart impressed again Jacky Ickx, who had fought in his Formula 2 cars up to the fifth position forward. After Stewart's failure due to a gearbox failure this was even briefly on the fourth before he was overtaken by Chris Amon. A suspension damage on the car of Ickx in the twelfth round finally prevented an even greater sensation.

As Gurney turned out with two laps due to a broken drive shaft, the way was open for the second victory of the season leading into the World Cup Denis Hulme. Behind Brabham came with only half a second ahead of Amon to the finish.

Formula 2 driver Jackie Oliver finished fifth. However, since he was not entitled to points, Joakim Bonnier and Guy Ligier moved on and received by each of their first points of the season.

For the first time since the Italian Grand Prix in 1961 no British rider stood on the podium.
