Background

Before the last World Cup race of the season Denis Hulme was in the standings with five points ahead of his teammate, the defending champion Jack Brabham. Apart from the two, no other driver had more chance of winning the World Cup. The team Brabham had already decided since the Italian Grand Prix as constructors' champions.

For the first time since the Belgian Grand Prix put the Scuderia Ferrari, a second factory cars next to that of a regular driver Chris Amon. Jonathan Williams played with it the first and only Grand Prix of his racing career.

Pedro Rodríguez returned to his injury-related break in time back to his home race in the Cooper cockpit. He was there, however, the only factory rider this weekend, as Jochen Rindt had already left the team and signed a Brabham contract for the following year.

Training

Fastest of the training was for the sixth time this season, Jim Clark. Thus, for the ninth time in a row was a Lotus 49 on pole position. Chris Amon qualified in the Ferrari 312 for second place. In the second row Dan Gurney placed before Clark's teammate Graham Hill. The third series was made up of the two Brabham the title Counterparty, where Jack Brabham took the slightly better starting place.

Race

Because of a defect in his petrol pump guest starter Mike Fisher could not rejoin the race. The Grand Prix of Canada 1967 thus remained his only GP participation.

Shortly after the start Gurney drove on to the Lotus of Jim Clark. Both were able to continue the race but apparently unaffected first. Gurney retired but a few laps later in because of his damaged in the accident cooler. At the top of Hill was in the early rounds before Amon. Both have been overtaken until the third round of Clark, who henceforth consistently dominated the race, though his clutch failed.

Hill retired on lap 18 due to a broken half- shaft. This Brabham came to third place. As Hulme but was right behind him in fourth place, he had in this way no shot at the world title.

Until shortly before the end of the race Amon defended second place. Then he was hampered by misfiring of the Ferrari engine, which came through lack of fuel into existence. This meant that Brabham, Hulme and Surtees could go by him. As Amon's last lap was too slow to be considered, he reached the end of the ninth.

Denis Hulme won for the first and only time the drivers' world championship. He is still the only New Zealander to have managed.
