The Grand Prix of South Africa in 1967 took place on January 2nd place at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit and was the first race of the Formula 1 season 1967.

Background

Since the first World Cup race of the 1967 season took place in Mexico on 2 January, and thus only a few weeks after the finale of the season in 1966, most teams competed with the previous year's vehicles.

In the field of driver agreements, however, some changes had resulted. John Surtees became the new sole factory rider for Honda. His place alongside Jochen Rindt Cooper took a Pedro Rodríguez.

Lotus took Graham Hill returned to the factory team. Meanwhile, place beside Jackie Stewart at B.R.M. was occupied with Mike Spence, who, in turn, the young Brit Piers Courage gave the chance to be Formula 1 Dabüt by his departure from the private team Reg Parnell.

Chris Amon and Lorenzo Bandini closed each one works driver contract with the Scuderia Ferrari. The team, however, decided against the trip to South Africa, as well as Bruce McLaren and his team.

Four local guest starter enriched the field in the privately entered cars, which, however, largely technically no longer met the current state. Among them was Luki Botha, who played his only Grand Prix participating in this activity. A total of 18 pilots were at the season opener.

Training

The two Brabham works driver, the composition of the previous year had remained unchanged, dominated the training. The result was the pole position for the team founder and reigning world champion Jack Brabham with his colleague Denis Hulme beside him in the front row. He was followed by Jim Clark and Pedro Rodríguez before already in training for caring sensation private driver John Love and John Surtees. The BRM works driver reached below average poor starting positions, and Hills 15th place was due to a series of technical defects.

Race

Hulme initially took the lead ahead of Brabham and Surtees. In the fourth round Brabham was overtaken by a mortgaged by its own error Dreher of Surtees and Rindt. The Austrians, however, turned himself shortly afterwards on a patch of oil and was overtaken by Stewart. Hill fell in the same round of because of an accident.

Brabham took meanwhile steadily on the leaders. On lap 21 he overtook the runner Surtees, three laps later, this was successfully Rindt, the other 15 laps later turned out, however, due to an engine failure. Meanwhile Surtees had fallen behind John Love and Dan Gurney.

Also Brabham got technical problems and had his second place at Love exits. Gurney was briefly third party before he even failed to technical reasons.

Hulme had moved out during the race a comfortable lead of over a minute when its brakes were weaker in the 61st round. He fell back, followed by the privateer John Love took over the leadership of the Grand Prix. Rodriguez, however, was able to follow and saw a chance of winning it. This resulted, however, only when Love had to refuel at the box seven laps to go.

Rodríguez secured his first Grand Prix victory with some 26 seconds ahead of the impressive John Love, who scored his first and only podium finish in a Grand Prix. John Surtees reached the podium in third place ahead of Denis Hulme, who despite his defect still managed to secure fourth place.
