Background

The field for the Canada GP was supplemented by several local guest driver, however the partially competed with obsolete, no longer competitive material. How about Al Pease led by the last Grand Prix using an Eagle racing car by he entered a private Eagle T1G with Climax engine. His compatriot John Cordts used the same engine in a Brabham BT23B. Moreover, since several work teams employing an optical third car, which compared to the previous season races relatively high number of 20 vehicles came about.

Ferrari did not occur in this and the following two flyaways in the U.S. and Mexico as a work team. The inserts with Pedro Rodríguez as a driver instead were from North American Racing Team performed.

Training

Although he had no chance of winning the title, Jacky Ickx presented throughout the weekend in good shape and secured the pole position. With half a second slower reached Jean -Pierre Beltoise, Jochen Rindt and the already fixed as world champion Jackie Stewart with mutually identical lap times starting places two to four.

Race

Rindt initially took the lead ahead of Ickx and Beltoise. Stewart won in the second round in third place in round five the second and overtook in the sixth round Rindt to take the lead. Also Ickx was a little later overtake Rindt and dueled henceforth with Stewart for the top position. Fourth-placed Beltoise fell back somewhat, since he had collided during a rounding maneuver with Al Pease. After the leadership group Pease had already overtaken on lap 22 for the fourth time, this was disqualified due to lack of competitiveness.

In the battle for the lead collided Ickx and Stewart, so that turned both vehicles. Then Ickx was able to continue the race as the leader, while Stewart could not get his car started and retired. Meanwhile, Jack Brabham had presided over working on Rindt in second place and thus completed a double victory of his own team.

By the third Matra factory driver Johnny Servoz - Gavin, who drove a MS84 and thus was sixth, was the first and only time in Formula 1 history, a driver with a four-wheel drive race cars one championship point.
