Background

A total of 25 race cars were reported for the Grand Prix, including the first time the Surtees TS7. Team Principal and Driver John Surtees thus launched for the first time in a private car to a World Championship race, after each disputed his previous race appearances in the 1970 season in a fitted for his private team McLaren M7.

Lotus announced a third works car. In addition to Jochen Rindt and John Miles in their Lotus 72 Emerson Fittipaldi was in this way participate in a Lotus 49C. After a pause the previous race and the private team of Frank Williams came first again, with Brian Redman as a driver. Mario Andretti, who had paused four races, was also present again.

Training

Rolf Stommelen crashed in training and damaged his car so that he could not participate in the race. He himself remained unhurt. Brian Redman's nomination was withdrawn due to a technical problem after training.

The two at the same time pole- Jochen Rindt and Jack Brabham shared with the three- tenths of a second slower Jacky Ickx on the front row. The five fastest lap times were obtained with five different vehicles.

Race

Immediately after the start took Jacky Ickx the lead. In this position, lying he left, however, after only six rounds due to a gearbox failure. Around the same time overtook Rindt Brabham and thus was the new leader. However, he could not settle much of the Australians. In the meantime, this even took the lead. On lap 69 Rindt made ​​a switching error and it looked like the race would thus favor Jack Brabham decided. But in the last round was this a few hundred meters before the finish line out of fuel. Jochen Rindt it to catch up and trap the only rolling Brabham off the line succeeded. Other drivers were back too far to also still overtake Jack Brabham, who reached the finish line 32.9 seconds after Rindt.

Jackie Oliver was down for most of the race in third place podium on course until his engine failed on lap 55. This Denis Hulme makes a podium finish.
