Background

With Lotus you can not decided, two weeks after the death of Jochen Rindt with the factory team at the Canadian Grand Prix take part. Thus, only a single Lotus cars for a world championship race was reported for the first time this season, namely the piloted by Graham Hill Lotus 72 the private team of Rob Walker.

Otherwise, there were no significant changes in the driver's field compared to the previous season races.

Training

It was expected that one would of been from race to race is always becoming stronger Ferrari 312B by Jacky Ickx and Clay Regazzoni reach the pole position. Somewhat surprisingly, however, drove Jackie Stewart Tyrrell in the new self-built, called the 001 fastest training time and then decided, to drive the car for the first time in a counting for the World Cup races. Race

Stewart first took the lead before Ickx and Pedro Rodríguez, who had come up from seventh from immediately after start on third place forward. Surtees, Cevert and Regazzoni followed in fourth, five and six. Stewart to out down a lead, which he put the competitiveness of the Tyrrell 001 impressive demonstration succeeded. However, on lap 32, he dropped out due to damage to the axle. Thus Ickx took the lead with about 30 seconds ahead of his teammate Regazzoni, in the meantime a few places forward had been able to fight. This was followed by Amon and Cevert, the latter in the closing stages of the race due to damage to one of the rear shocks had to make a pit stop and thereby forfeited some places.

The two Ferrari drivers reached a commanding one-two victory, which Ickx climb to second place in the championship standings. With two races to go and 17 points behind the leaders still Jochen Rindt Ickx had the chance to win the world title. Prerequisite for this, however, was up victories in both races still following.
