Reports

Background

A year after the fatal accident of Jochen Rindt the official Team Lotus not traveled to Monza, because it was feared conflict with the Italian judiciary. Instead, a Lotus 56 was reported under the team name " World Wide Racing " for the regular driver Emerson Fittipaldi. Due to other commitments of the parent driver Denis Hulme McLaren reported only exceptionally a car for Jackie Oliver, as well as Matra, where only Chris Amon was launched due to the persistent barrier against Jean -Pierre Beltoise.

In contrast to these teams Surtees reported a third car for Mike Hailwood, who thus after six years of absence for the first time attended a Grand Prix. Team founder John Surtees had a few days earlier won a not for the World Cup scoring formula 1 race in Oulton Park.

The last time the Monza circuit was traveled entirely in their hitherto known layout without harassment, which had already led in recent years to slipstream duels and thus exciting race courses with limited results.

Training

There was the engine power is crucial to the high speed line, equipped with the Matra V12 engine -driver Chris Amon was able to conquer the pole position. It was followed by the comparable engine pilots Jacky Ickx, Jo Siffert and Howden Ganley. The best driver with a V8 engine was François Cevert to start fifth.

Race

The race began with a marked jump start from Clay Regazzoni, which accelerated from the fourth row and the top took over. The offense was not punished, despite its obviousness. Behind him, formed a chase group whose leadership due to the slipstream situation was constantly changing. In the third round Ronnie Peterson was able to overtake the first Regazzoni, before he was in turn ousted four laps later by Jackie Stewart from the top. Regazzoni succeeded, favored by the wind shadow to capture the lead on lap nine again, before he was again overtaken in the next round of Peterson.

Once in rounds 15 to 17, both Ferrari and Jackie Stewart were each failed due to technical problems, was a first consisting of seven riders group at the top. Among them were Siffert and Ganley, however, fell back a short time each because of overheated engines. Meanwhile succeeded Amon and Hailwood, to join the leading group. Also Ganley found little later the connection. Siffert managed also, once again catch up with the leaders before threw him back gearbox problems permanently.

Shortly before the end of the race also Amon lost the connection to the leadership group. When he tried to remove the tinted sun film of his helmet visor, he tore accidentally the entire visor. Since his eyes were thereby exposed to the wind, he could not keep the pace of the leaders.

Even in the last round The lead changed several more times. Cevert went into the fourth- last turn in the lead, Peterson attacked before the last corner, the Parabolica. From this curve out accelerated Peter Gethin best and was on the home straight narrow lead. The quintet crossed the finish line broad. With a distance of 0.61 seconds between the winner and the fifth-placed the result is considered the closest finish of the Formula 1 history. Between the First and Fourth were even just 0.18 seconds. Amon was around 32 seconds behind in sixth and won the last championship point of the day. None of the six points winner had previously ever won a Grand Prix.

Henri Pescarolo succeeded in his appointed by Frank Williams customer - March, the fastest race lap. He drove an average speed of 247.016 km / h As from the next year chicanes were integrated into the route and no other track in the Formula 1 calendar allowed similar speeds, kept this record until 1993 its validity. Only then could be broken by Damon Hill.

Peter Gethin reached his first and only Grand Prix victory, even though he had completed only three laps as the leader. The guide had a total change in the course of the race between eight riders 25 times.
