1974–75 2. Bundesliga

The 2nd Bundesliga was created with the new season 1974/75 as base the Bundesliga. It was played in two seasons ( North and South) to each of 20 clubs. The two relay champions went directly to the Bundesliga, the third promotion spot was determined in two relegation matches between the respective Second Season.

In 1974, the 2nd Bundesliga was introduced in two seasons. After an elaborate point system, the clubs should be able to qualify for the new leagues. Decisive were not only the rankings of the previous five seasons, but also economic and structural conditions. In addition there was a five-year summary, the first two years simply, the next two years twice and the last year counted in triplicate. In case of equality the last year should apply.

Under this scheme, the DFB had overlooked, however, that the ten participating at the annual promotion round to the Bundesliga regional league had not qualified by its ranking in the 1973/74 season from the outset for the new 2nd Bundesliga. In the case of the 1st FC Saarbruecken, this meant that the club after the failure in the promotion round despite not meeting the existing criteria in the 2nd Bundesliga Süd was recorded and took the place of the SV Alsenborn, who also came from the Regional Southwest. The SV Alsenborn, a trained Fritz Walter "Village Club", was previously failed three times in the Bundesliga promotion round and had clearly qualified for the new league. The DFB was that no second division suitable conditions were present in Alsenborn and this also can not be improved in the near future and classified the SV Alsenborn in the then third-class Amateur League West back, although the club for successful participation in one of the three ascent rounds of the Bundesliga with a special permission even in the top division would be able to play (of course not in Alsenborn, but in Kaiserslautern or Ludwigshafen).

As Season Champion rose at the end of the season Hannover 96 (Season North) and the Karlsruher SC (Season South) in the Bundesliga. After two relegation matches against FK Pirmasens Bayer Uerdingen completed the ascent trio.

From the Bundesliga SV Wuppertal, Tennis Borussia Berlin rose ( in the Season Nord) and VfB Stuttgart ( in the Season South) and thus played the following season in the 2nd Bundesliga.
