Background

With several changes in the driver crews, the teams competed for the Grand Prix of Austria. Jean -Pierre Jabouille was hired at Surtees to replace Jochen Mass. He had terminated his contract with the team as well as the main sponsor of Bang & Olufsen. Mike Hailwood had to end his Formula 1 career after his serious accident at the Grand Prix of Germany two weeks earlier. His place in the third factory McLaren took henceforth be a compatriot David Hobbs. When Team Ensign Vern Schuppan was replaced by Mike Wilds and Rolf Stommelen took over as a replacement for the injured Guy Edwards Lola in the second team of Graham Hill.

With Dieter Quester in a third factory Surtees with its own main sponsor as well as the Formula 1 newcomer in the private Brabham BT42 Helmut Koinigg Scuderia Finotto supplemented two local guest driver the message list. Training

For the fifth consecutive time, Niki Lauda secured the pole position in the Ferrari 312B3. Carlos Reutemann won second place in the front row. This was followed by Emerson Fittipaldi and Carlos Pace in the second row and Jody Scheckter and Ronnie Peterson in series three.

Jacky Ickx once had more problems with the new Lotus 76 and only reached 22 on the grid. Race
