A three week previously largely unchanged compared to the Grand Prix of Austria driver field has been reported for the race weekend at Monza. One of the few changes was the re- use of José Dolhem as Surtees works driver instead of Jean -Pierre Jabouille. In addition, the private Brabham team Scuderia Finotto was awarded again to a local guest driver. These were led by Carlo Facetti, which was reported for the first and only time for a Grand Prix. The team had also reported another car for the Frenchman Jean -Louis Lafosse. This message was but rejected in advance by the organizers.

In addition, the irregular An incoming team Chris Amon Racing was back at the start. B.R.M. came back into the usual cast with three factory cars.

Training

For the second year in a row resulted from the training times a front row consisting of the Ferrari 312B3 of the now nine-time pole - setter Niki Lauda and Brabham factory driver Carlos Reutemann. This was followed by Carlos Pace and John Watson, who was allowed to use the T-car factory team after an accident with his usual customer Brabham, Brabham BT44 two more. The third series consisted of the title candidates Regazzoni and Fittipaldi. This was followed by Ronnie Peterson, James Hunt, Jean -Pierre and Patrick Jarier Depailler. The fourth opponent in the championship fight, Jody Scheckter qualified for the twelfth grade, while again six pilots failed due to the qualification as the starting field is limited by the organizers on 25 vehicles.

Race

During the first round, the order remained constant at the first places. In the second round, Watson was overtaken by Regazzoni, who was passing through the rounds also at Pace and Reutemann and Lauda added tip position to a cheering of the numerous attending spectators Ferrari double guide.

The three Brabham, which were all up in a promising position, fell over the next few laps due to technical problems either completely out or at least for the time being hopeless back. This Peterson came in third place and Fittipaldi and Scheckter also in the points.

Until the 30th round of this order remained unchanged. Then Lauda's engine began to smoke and he slowed down. Regazzoni took the lead and soon after Lauda had to finish the race. For ten rounds from then led the Swiss before it failed because of a similar engine failure. The leading henceforth Peterson dueled then twelve rounds with Fittipaldi, this pressure continued but stood and crossed just before the Brazilians the finish line. It was the last Grand Prix victory, which was achieved with the Lotus 72, the basic design dated back to the 1970 season. Scheckter was third ahead of Arturo Merzario that showed a convincing performance in front of a home crowd at Iso - Marlboro Team Frank Williams Racing Cars. Carlos Pace and Denis Hulme received the final championship points of the day.

Furthermore, not prejudice apparent in the title fight. The three leaders in the world championship standings moved even by the race result again closer together. Only Niki Lauda lost touch somewhat, but still had mathematical chances.
