Background

The entry list for the Monaco GP was opposite of the Belgian Grand Prix two weeks earlier by a somewhat lesser extent, mainly because small private teams saw no realistic chance to qualify for a place in the limited to 25 pilots starting field. In yet reported 28 vehicles initially had to expect to fail at the qualification hurdle three drivers.

Training

The front row was formed by the two Ferrari 312B3 Niki Lauda and Clay Regazzoni.

When Team Lotus had decided after repeated failures with the new Model 76 to again to compete with the Type 72, the basic design dated back to 1970. Ronnie Peterson still qualified for the third place. The second factory driver Jacky Ickx achieved with the really outdated cars, however, only the 19th Place.

Behind Peterson, the two Tyrrell driver Patrick and Jody Scheckter Depailler qualified ahead of Jean -Pierre Jarier on Shadow.

The leading in the world championship standings Emerson Fittipaldi reached only a disappointing 13th place.

Guy Edwards, Henri Pescarolo and Rikky von Opel did not manage to qualify first. However, since the actually qualified Jochen Mass and Chris Amon could not start the race due to technical problems, Pescarolo and Edwards also moved on.

Race

Depailler had to complain of an engine failure during the warm up laps and finally had to start in the replacement car from the end of the field.

The race started with a dominant idea of the two Ferrari that could hold easily at the top of the field. Initially led Regazzoni before Lauda. Jarier followed them in third place.

In midfield, there was a collision between Denis Hulme and Jean -Pierre Beltoise, in which additionally Merzario Arturo, Carlos Pace and Brian Redman were directly involved. Thus, the field was significantly depleted in the first round. Vittorio Brambilla, Tim giving and Vern Schuppan, each of which was indirectly implicated excreted within a few minutes due to consequential damage also made.

Behind Regazzoni and Lauda Peterson showed a strong performance by vorbeizog during the second round of Jarier and caught up to the two Ferrari. In the third round Hans- Joachim Stuck bounced in the field of casino into the back of James Hunt's Hesketh. The Briton was able to continue the race, stucco, however, bounced with his March into the barriers and injured himself. A little later, François Migault had to survive a scare when he because of a brake defect in the harbor chicane with his BRM crashed headlong into a security fence erected there.

In the sixth round, Peterson made ​​a mistake in the Rascasse and was rammed by Carlos Reutemann, who could not escape in time. Reutemann was eliminated thereby. Peterson could, however, continue in sixth place behind the two leading Ferrari and Jean -Pierre Jarier, Jody Scheckter and Mike Hailwood his ride. He got back to fifth by Hailwood failure on lap 12.

After just twelve rounds half of the participants had already left, the situation for a few rounds calmed. Then Peterson passed successively Scheckter and Jarier and passed through a spin of the hitherto leader Regazzoni finally to second place behind the now leading Lauda. Meanwhile electrics failed in the 33rd round, so Peterson could take the lead. In second place followed Scheckter, who in turn had just been overtaken Jarier. Then remained the order of the points placed within the ranks of pilots constant until the end of the race.

John Watson took his first World Championship point as sixth -placed.
