Background

In the roughly two months that lay between the Grand Prix of Brazil and the third World Championship race of the year in South Africa, two not for the World Cup scoring formula 1 races were held. The "President Medici GP" in Brasília could finish victorious the local Emerson Fittipaldi, the "Race of Champions" at Brands Hatch won Jacky Ickx. Shortly thereafter, some of the Formula 1 teams found for test drives in advance of the South African GP at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit a. Here, Peter Revson was killed by his Shadow - Ford head first struck as a result of suspension damage in the crash barriers. The Shadow team pulled thereupon returns the message to participate in the Grand Prix and departed.

Traditionally, the field of participants in South Africa was then supplemented by some local guest driver. Dave Charlton and Eddie Keizan already participated once again in the privately entered cars in the race part. Hesketh Racing no longer appeared as a customer team in March, but the first time with the first developed by the team itself racing cars. Training

Niki Lauda achieved in the Ferrari 312B3 the pole position and thus the first pole position of his Grand Prix career. Race

On lap 66 Regazzoni had to retire due to an engine problem. The second Ferrari of Lauda followed nine laps later for a similar damage. Reutemann eventually won before Beltoise and Hailwood, each for the last time reached the podium of a Grand Prix. Stuck was fifth, the first two championship points his Formula 1 career.

It was the first Grand Prix victory of Argentine since the Grand Prix of Germany in 1957, the Juan -Manuel Fangio had won, and the first win for the team Brabham since the last success of the team 's founder Jack Brabham at the Grand Prix of South Africa 1970.
