Background
Two weeks after the Swede Ronnie Peterson won the Monaco Grand Prix, Formula 1 came to the second overall World Cup Grand Prix in his home country.
Due to a limited number of participants by the organizer the message list comprised 27 cars. Hans -Joachim Stuck was missing due to injury and was represented in the works March of Pure Wisell. Since Brian Redman ended his Formula 1 career and the second shadow cockpit was therefore vacant next to Jean -Pierre Jarier, went with Bertil Roos a third Swede at the start. For him it was the first and only Grand Prix participation.
Arturo Merzario came with a broken finger that he had previously suffered during a sports car race at the weekend in Imola, at the training. When he realized that this injury to him very disabled, he first stepped from his car to Richard Robarts. This had the vehicle but leave after training the better -placed on the grid BELSO Tom, who had damaged his own emergency vehicle.
The team B.R.M. did not make it, all three works cars in time to repair for the Sweden -GP, so that only two vehicles were available and François Migault as third works driver had left behind.
Training
The two Tyrrell pilots reached by their performances in training the two seats in the front row, with Patrick Depailler scored the first and only pole position of his Grand Prix career. Behind his teammate Jody Scheckter were the two Ferrari 312B3 Niki Lauda and Clay Regazzoni the second row. This was followed by Lotus driver Ronnie Peterson, James Hunt and Jacky Ickx in the second Lotus 72E, to whom they gave the preference to the newer Type 76 due to better reliability as before.
Jean -Pierre Jarier and the leading in the world championship Emerson Fittipaldi and Carlos Reutemann completed the top ten.
Race
Scheckter took the second place of the lead while started from the pole position Depailler was also overtaken by Peterson. This was followed by Lauda, Regazzoni and Reutemann. Until the ninth round this order remained constant. Then Peterson dropped out because of damage to the drive shaft, thereby allowing a Tyrrell - double guide.
As Regazzoni was eliminated in the 24th round due to a gearbox failure, took Hunt, who had previously overtaken Reutemann, fourth place behind the two Tyrrell and Lauda. Reutemann retired on lap 31 because of an oil leak, so that the two McLaren drivers Fittipaldi and Denis Hulme reached the points. For Hulme, however, this situation lasted only until the 57th round, when he retired because of suspension damage. Vittorio Brambilla came by to sixth place.
As Lauda got increasingly technical problems in the further course of the race, succeeded Hunt for a lasting around 20 laps duel overtake in the 66th round at the Austrian. A few laps later, this difference due to a gearbox failure from final.
While Hunt was able to keep at the top with the two Tyrrell, but found no way to pass them. Thus, Jody Scheckter secured the first Grand Prix victory of his career.
Due to the failure Vittorio Brambillas shortly before the end of the race, Graham Hill moved up to sixth place forward and thus got his first championship point of the year. Brambilla was considered still in tenth due to its distance traveled.
Ensign driver Vern Schuppan reached the goal, but was disqualified after the race, as he was started without approval.
The first seven World Cup races of the season had produced six different winners. A clear favorite to win the World Cup was not yet apparent.
