Background

As the Formula 1 took two weeks after the Monaco Grand Prix in Zolder, missing Mario Andretti, who at the same time held the Indianapolis 500 took part, and Roelof Wunderink, who was injured in a Formula 5000 race at Zandvoort. Since both Parnelli and Ensign Racing waived an obligation of reserve drivers, both teams were missing at the Grand Prix.

As Graham Hill had ended his active racing career and Rolf Stommelen had to recover from his serious injuries he had suffered his accident at the Grand Prix of Spain, François Migault and Tony Brise was hired as a cast for the two Hill GH1.

Training

Niki Lauda qualified with a faster by only four hundredths of a second compared to second-placed Carlos Pace lap for the pole position. Vittorio Brambilla reached after a convincing performance in training the third place before Clay Regazzoni, Tom Pryce, Carlos Reutemann and also positively striking Tony Brise. Leading in the World Championship Emerson Fittipaldi was first followed behind on the eighth place on the side of Jody Scheckter.

Race

Pace succeeded against Lauda the better start, which he took the lead before the first corner. This was followed by Brambilla before Regazzoni, Reutemann and Scheckter.

During breeze dropped back after a short time due to engine problems, Scheckter went past Reutemann and Regazzoni. Brambilla presented his competitiveness this weekend already shown in training again impressively demonstrated by he overtook both Lauda and Pace and thus took the lead. Lauda went a little later also at Pace over and was thus again on the second rank.

In the sixth round Lauda captured the leadership of Brambilla. Three laps later also Scheckter, who had meanwhile overtaken Pace, walked past the Italians and thus supplanted him to third place. The order at the top thus produced remained constant until the 49th lap when Brambilla came to changing a tire on the box and thus Reutemann had to leave the third place.

Fittipaldi had lain in the meantime in fourth place, but was in the final phase of Depailler, Regazzoni and Pryce displaced to seventh place and thus out of the points. He thus lost his championship lead to the winner Lauda.
