Background

The Parnelli team not stepped up to the Grand Prix of the Netherlands, as a regular driver Mario Andretti took part in a race in his native United States. The Team Ensign Racing, however, was back in the game and committed Gijs van Lennep as a substitute driver for the injured Roelof Wunderink. After the private team Harry Stiller Racing got out from Formula 1, Graham Hill undertook its driver Alan Jones as a new second team driver Tony Brise next. The team Maki Engineering resigned after two appearances during the 1974 season for the first time at a Grand Prix weekend. The debutant Hiroshi Fushida has been reported as a driver.

Training

After three wins in a row Niki Lauda was the clear favorite for the weekend, which he substantiated with the achievement of its already fourth pole position of the season. His team-mate Clay Regazzoni completed the front row. Behind it was James Hunt, who had the training time of Jody Scheckter undercut scarce. This was followed by Carlos Reutemann and Emerson Fittipaldi before Tony Brise, who again showed a strong performance at the wheel of the Hill GH1.

Race

At the start of the race it was raining. Niki Lauda took advantage of the clear visibility at the top, while Regazzoni again took third place behind Scheckter and just ahead of Hunt after a few meters. This was followed by Jochen Mass and Tom Pryce in positions four and five.

As the track dried out gradually, different strategies of the drivers and pit teams could be observed. James Hunt and Jean -Pierre Jarier stopped very early to switch to slicks. This paid off because after the later had completed his tire change to date, leading Lauda, ​​he came only as a third behind the two back on track.

In the 44th round Lauda captured after an exciting duel in second place of Jarier. This turned a lap later due to a tire defect and retired. Meanwhile Lauda shortened the projection of the leaders Hunt.

Due to an engine failure Scheckter lost in the 68th round in third place at Regazzoni. During the last 15 laps Lauda dueled with Hunt for the win. The Briton remained front and won his first Grand Prix. It was also the first and only victory of the team Hesketh Racing.
