Background
For the Swedish Grand Prix Mario Andretti and Torsten Palm returned to the peloton after they had the Grand Prix of Belgium failed two weeks earlier. Frank Williams had meanwhile involved two new drivers since Arturo Merzario had left the team and Jacques Laffite was not available due to a parallel event Formula 2 race at Hockenheim. He opted for Ian Scheckter and for the Formula 1 newcomer Damien Magee. Graham Hill replaced in his team François Migault by Vern Schuppan.
Training
Vittorio Brambilla, who was already noticed in Belgium by very good performances, his top form impressively confirmed by reaching the pole position in the not as favored in force March 751 Tyrrell pilot Patrick Depailler, Jean -Pierre Jarier in Shadow and Brabham driver Carlos Reutemann occupied the starting positions next to and behind him. Race
Brambilla took the lead before Depailler, Jarier, Reutemann, Pace and Lauda. This order of the first six pilots changed during the first 15 laps only by a successful overtaking of Reutemann against Jarier. Then different from Depailler because of a brake defect. In the next round the leading Brambilla, who slowed due to superheating tire was overtaken by Reutemann. He settled for a pit stop to change the tire, so he fell back far. Followed behind the leading Reutemann then Jarier before Pace, Lauda, Regazzoni and Andretti.
By Jariers technical failure on lap 39, a Brabham -two lead, but a little later ended by a spin Paces revealed. The now second-placed Lauda, who was traveling with a harder compared to most competitors tire compound, closed during the following rounds to Reutemann. In the course of which he repeatedly undercut the lap record. In the 70th round he succeeded in overtaking against the Argentines, who had meanwhile struggling with understeer. To put the Austrians his third consecutive victory sure. Behind Reutemann and Regazzoni, the two American Mario Andretti and Mark Donohue and Tony Brise achieved rankings in the points. For breeze, this was the first and only championship point of his Formula 1 career and the first point for the still young factory team Embassy Hill.
