Training

Next to him, qualified Niki Lauda, who led the world championship standings with considerable advantage, for the first row. The second series was formed by Patrick Depailler and Clay Regazzoni. Carlos Pace reached the fifth place, which had to be counted in the 1976 season as a success given the recent results of the teams in the Brabham.

Race

Lauda won the start and sat in front of Hunt, Regazzoni, Depailler and Ronnie Peterson at the top of the field. During the first round, the positions between Peterson and Depailler changed. In round two, Jody Scheckter came to John Watson past to sixth place.

In the ninth round Lauda retired due to an engine failure. On lap 18, this also reiterated at his teammate Regazzoni. As a result, Hunt led the race with a comfortable lead over Depailler who had passed in the meantime as well as Scheckter to Peterson. This now dueled with Watson for the fourth. He won the duel and could eventually after Scheckter had technical difficulties with his Tyrrell, again occupy the third place, but resigned a few laps before the end of the race out due to problems with the fuel supply. The third place thus went to Watson, who was able to record his first podium in Formula 1.
