Background

The Formula 1 started with several rule changes in the European season. These included, among others, size limits on the airbox and the rear wing of the racing cars. The last part extremely towering Airboxes thus belonged to the past. Scuderia Ferrari presented in response to these changes the 312T2, a development of the 312T, in which the combustion air is sucked in through inlets, which were on the sides of the cockpit. The positive effect of the airbox was thereby maintained and only edited the rules. Ensign also presented a new car. The most spectacular new development was, however, the Tyrrell P34, which decreed as the first Formula 1 race over six wheels, the front four were steerable. Patrick graduated from the Premiere Depailler use of the car, while his team-mate Jody Scheckter with the conventional 007 was launched.

As Vel 's Parnelli Jones Team Racing had finished his Formula 1 involvement after the Grand Prix in Long Beach, Mario Andretti was looking for a new contract. The Team Lotus signed him then instead of Brian Henton as the second regular driver next to Gunnar Nilsson.

The new team RAM Racing first appeared and announced two customer Brabham for the two debutant Loris Kessel and Emilio Zapico. With Emilio de Villota the wheel of a Williams FW04 Private another local Formula 1 newcomer complemented the message list. The former main sponsor of Ensign, the Dutch company HB Bewaking alarm system, put a previous vehicle of the type Ensign N175 one under the name Boro 001 and engaged Larry Perkins as a driver.

The team of Frank Williams Racing Cars entered henceforth officially under the name of his increasingly influential main sponsor Walter Wolf Racing.
