For the second time after 1974, the French Grand Prix was held in Dijon. The route had since been extended by the addition of the designated " Parabolique " section by about 500 meters.

The originally planned debut of the Renault team with a turbo engine at the home race had to be postponed to the Grand Prix of Great Britain in the short term, to which some French audience responded with disappointment. Surprisingly Surtees strain pilot Larry Perkins by the emerging young French driver Patrick Tambay was instead replaced during training.

Training

Mario Andretti presented by reaching the pole position again the competitiveness of the Lotus 78 demonstrated, followed by James Hunt, who seemed to cope better with the now ever more developed McLaren M26 after initial problems. For the second row Gunnar Nilsson and John Watson qualified.

The two leaders in the world championship, Jody Scheckter and Niki Lauda, were found after training on the eighth and ninth again.

Since the track was made in the previous year, despite the expansion of one of the shortest courses of the season, the maximum number of starters for the race on 22 vehicles was limited. The slowest eight of the 30 who had traveled pilots could not qualify accordingly.

Race

James Hunt went from second place on the grid in the lead ahead of John Watson, Jacques Laffite and the poor launched Mario Andretti. In the fifth round Watson took the lead. Until the 17th round changed to this order at the top of anything. Then Andretti overtook the runner- Hunt and took from then slightly to Watson, whose lead of five seconds was slowly lower.

Only in the last lap Andretti walked past Watson when he had to deal with fuel shortage. He was able to defend second place against Hunt, the disappointment of just missing out on the victory prevailed, however. Gunnar Nilsson was fourth ahead of the two Ferrari drivers Niki Lauda and Carlos Reutemann.
