1977 Men's European Volleyball Championship

The Volleyball European Championship Men 1977 took place from 25 September to 2 October in Finland. Germany was represented by the team of the GDR among the twelve participants. The games were held in Helsinki, Tampere, Oulu and Turku. The Soviet Union became the fourth consecutive European Champion.

Mode

First, a preliminary round was held, in which the twelve teams were divided into two groups of six. The top two teams in each group played in the next round for the first four places, with the table first met each on the Second Table of the other group. Similarly, the third and fourth group were playing for places five to eight, and the remaining teams to the ranks of nine to twelve.

Qualification

Finland was set as host. The top five teams in the European championship in 1975 were also automatically qualified. These were the Soviet Union as the defending champion, the second of Poland, the Third Yugoslavia, the Fourth and the Fifth Romania Bulgaria.

Fourteen teams played in three groups of six other places. The top two teams in each group qualified for the final tournament. In Group A, France and the Netherlands hosts prevailed. The Group B won the Czechoslovakia and Hungary. In Group C, the GDR and Italy were successful, while the Federal Republic remained only the final ranking.
