1978–79 Norwegian 1. Divisjon season
The 1978/79 season was the 40th season of the first divisjon, the highest Norwegian ice hockey league. Master became the second overall time in club history Frisk Asker. Sparta Sarpsborg and Storhamar Dragons were relegated to the second division.

Mode
In the main round each of the ten teams played a total of 18 games. The top six teams qualified for the final round, the First Place Champion. The remaining four teams had to play in the relegation round, descended whose two last placed in the second division. For a win, each team was given two points, a draw there was a point and a defeat.
