1978 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship
The Volleyball Women's World Cup 1978 was held from 25 August to 6 September in the Soviet Union instead. Cuba won for the first time the title. The Games were held in Leningrad, Riga, Minsk and Volgograd.
Mode
The 23 participants played in the first round in three groups of four and a group of three. The top two teams in each group were in the second round two groups of six, the rest of the team came in a six and one group of five. The results were taken against direct competitors. Then all ranks were determined in placement games.

Qualification
The host Soviet Union and the twelve best teams in the last World Cup were set. The other participants qualified for their good placement at the European Championships in 1977 or at the continental championships in the NORCECA, South America, Asia and Africa. However, Romania, Argentina and Egypt renounced participation and were replaced by the Netherlands, Italy and Finland. For the team also were not taken from North Korea, it was no substitute.
