1978 UEFA European Under-21 Championship

At the U -21 Football Championship in 1978, 24 teams participating.

The qualifying matches in the eight qualifying groups were launched on 3 September 1976, and concluded on 30 November 1977. The quarter-final was in the period from 8 March to 5 April 1978, and the semi-final was held in the period 19 April to 2 May 1978. The finals for the title took place on 17 and 31 May 1978, with the Yugoslavia prevailed against East Germany with a total score of 5:4 and won the European title.

While the GDR came to the finals, left Austria, which was in the first round in a group with the GDR, as well as the Switzerland as a group last of. The Federal Republic of Germany did not take part.

Mode

The 24 teams were drawn into eight groups each teams. The national selections had to work through their encounters with return game. The group winners ( marked in yellow ) were qualified for the quarter-finals, was played in from the return game in knockout format until the final.

Cutting off the German teams

East Germany and Austria

The GDR and Austria met in the preliminary round in Group 3 to Turkey. The GDR started here with a 1-1 draw in Turkey and has the remaining three games - 6:1 ( Vienna) and 2:1 ( Erfurt) against Austria and 4:0 ( Magdeburg ) against Turkey - win and Get confidently win the group. After Austria in Vienna against Turkey, a 2-2 draw was not excessive and was defeated in Turkey with 1:2, remained only the last group space for the red-white- red selection.

Switzerland

The Switzerland succeeded in the preliminary round Group 6 (Bern) against Scotland with a 2-0 victory a successful start. After the remaining three games - 0:4 ( Budweis) and 0:2 ( Zurich ) against Czechoslovakia and 1:3 in Scotland - were lost, the Confederates had to make do with last place.
