Background

Nelson Piquet and Carlos Reutemann came as tied Leading in the World Championship Drivers' Championship for the 13th World Championship race, which was again held at the traditional route from Monza to one-year break, in which the Italian Grand Prix in Imola had occurred. Alain Prost were also not given a realistic chance of winning the world title.

In the driver's field, there were no changes since the Grand Prix of the Netherlands two weeks earlier.

Training

René Arnoux gave his team Renault sixth pole position in a row. For him, it was the fourth of the year. That does not result in both Renault drivers occupied the front row for the fifth time, prevented Carlos Reutemann by displaced Alain Prost on the third place. It was followed by Jacques Laffite, Alan Jones and Nelson Piquet.

Brian Henton succeeded in the tenth attempt as the first driver to qualify with a Toleman for a Grand Prix.

Race

Through a sensational start Didier Pironi reached behind Prost, Reutemann and Arnoux fourth the first chicane. Even during the first round he fought his way up to second place forward, but was ousted in the fifth round of Arnoux again from this position and fell behind shortly after Laffite back, who had previously overtaken Jones, Piquet and Reutemann. Gilles Villeneuve, meanwhile, had caught up with the leading group, but retired due to damage to the turbocharger in the seventh round. Due to a puncture Laffite fell back first. When it started to rain shortly thereafter, he left as well as four additional counterparties were surprised by the onset of rain.

The two Renault introduced well ahead of the two Williams, as Arnoux in the Parabolica briefly off the track and thus alone Prost left the tip.

In the 20th round, a serious accident occurred when John Watson in the Lesmo curves control of his McLaren MP4 / 1 lost and so violently crashed into the barriers that the engine was torn out of the car.
