1981 Men's European Volleyball Championship
The Volleyball European Championship Men 1981 was held from September 19 to 27 held in Bulgaria. Germany was represented by the Federal Republic and the GDR among the twelve participants. The games were held in Varna, Pazardzhik and Burgas. The Soviet Union became the sixth consecutive European Champion.
Mode
First, a preliminary round was held, in which the twelve teams were divided into three groups of four. The top two teams in each group played in the final group of " all against all " for the title. The remaining teams played to the ranks of seven to twelve. Results from teams that met in the preliminary round each other, were taken over in the final round.

The Federal Republic of Germany played with Burkhard brews, Christoph Naumann, Frank Winkler, Jörg Zander, Ernst Schäfer, Gerhard Weber, Dieter Markus, Horst Rath, Jörg Bruges, Ulrich Kampa, Ralf Nitzlaff and Martin Keck.

Qualification
Bulgaria was set as host. The top five teams in the European championship in 1979 were also automatically qualified. These were the Soviet Union as the defending champion, the second of Poland, the Third Yugoslavia, the Fourth and the Fifth Italy France.
Sixteen teams played in three groups at six other places. The top two teams in each group qualified for the final tournament.
