Background

To prevent that the FOCA teams after the Grand Prix of San Marino still boycotting another race, acted the FISA with the team leaders at a meeting in Casablanca a compromise.

Inside the Ferrari team, there was dispute over the team orders. In particular, Gilles Villeneuve was angered by his team-mate Didier Pironi, as it had overtaken him in the final meters in Imola. He refused to talk to his former good friend.

Emilio de Villota returned to four -year break at the wheel of a third plant in March, the formula returns 1. With Marc Surer and Jan Lammers, there were also two other returnees this weekend.

Training

Since 32 pilots were present, had the two slowest, who were not allowed to participate in the regular qualifying session, are determined in a pre-qualification. These were to Riccardo palletizing and Emilio de Villota.

During the second qualifying session on Saturday Villeneuve tried the time of his recently hated teammate Pironi to undercut to stand absolutely on the grid prior to this. During his qualifying round he ran on Jochen Mass, who was on his way back to the pits and therefore went comparatively slowly. Mass saw the approaching Ferrari in the rearview mirror and released the racing line by moving to the right. Unfortunately, Villeneuve had decided at the same time, off the racing line right at the German overtake. He drove by at high speed on the March 821. His Ferrari 126C2 on rose, landed with the vehicle ahead beyond the tip guard rails and bounced from there back on track. The car broke into several parts and Villeneuve was thrown out along with his seat. Directly at the scene and during transport to the hospital resuscitation attempts were carried out. In the evening, the medical devices were switched off and Gilles Villeneuve pronounced dead. The Ferrari team traveled from then.

The front row was shared by the two Renault works driver Alain Prost and Rene Arnoux. In third place followed Keke Rosberg, who graduated this weekend the first Grand Prix of the new Williams FW08 use. Niki Lauda followed Michele Alboreto ago, Andrea de Cesaris and Nigel Mansell. Race

Prost was referred to third place shortly after the start of Arnoux and Rosberg. As Arnoux in the fifth round due to damage to the turbocharger was heading the box and shortly afterwards turned out, Rosberg took the lead. Since Prost also had to struggle with technical problems, he fell behind Lauda and de Cesaris.

In the 29th round Lauda lost in the course of a lapping maneuver in second place on de Cesaris. However, as this six laps later due to a problem with the transmission was eliminated, the Austrians got back to second place. John Watson, meanwhile, had overhauled Patrese and decreased from then on the distance from his teammate Lauda, who seemed to be a bit slower due to a softer tire compound. In the 46th round, the positions of the two changed.

On the penultimate lap Rosberg ran into difficulties due deteriorating tires just next to the racing line. Watson took advantage of this little mistake to take the lead and ensure the third Grand Prix victory of his career. Rosberg crossed the finish line second ahead of Lauda. The Austrians, however, was disqualified after the race, as his race car did not meet the required minimum weight. This Eddie Cheever came subsequently to third place in front of Elio de Angelis, Nelson Piquet and Chico Serra.
