Background

The only change within the driver's field in comparison to the U.S. Grand Prix East was the return of Geoff Lees, who stepped as the representative for Jan Lammers in Theodore Racing.

Training

Didier Pironi qualified with the Ferrari 126C2 for the pole position in front of the two also equipped with turbo engines Renault driver Alain Prost and Rene Arnoux. Nelson Piquet, who had missed the qualification with the Brabham - BMW on the weekend, reached the fourth place ahead of Bruno Giacomelli and John Watson.

Race

At the start Pironi stalled his engine. Most subsequent drivers to drive around the unexpected obstacle succeeded. However, Raul Boesel reacted very late and touched the stationary Ferrari easily. Riccardo palletizing, which the view was obstructed on the stationary vehicle by Boesel previously could not react in time, and hit with force in the rear of the Ferrari, which was then pushed across the track into the car the same time as passing Geoff Lees. Pironi was unhurt and immediately came to the aid of the marshals who tried, with the support of the Formula 1 doctor Sid Watkins, to free the badly injured palletizing from his wreck. During the rescue, which took about half an hour, there was briefly a fire, which was however quickly extinguished. Palletizing was brought by helicopter to the hospital where he roughly two hours later succumbed to his injuries.

The race, which was canceled after the launch accident immediately, was restarted 18 clock local time. While Pironi was able to participate in a T -Car, Lee had to do without the restart, as he had no replacement vehicle available. Jean -Pierre Jarier refrained from participating because of the death of his teammate.

While Pironi took the lead before Arnoux, Prost, Piquet and Watson, Nigel Mansell collided in the first round with Bruno Giacomelli and injured. Due to lack of handling of the replacement Pironi Ferrari fell to the third round back to fourth place.

In the ninth round Piquet took the lead. This was supplemented from the 29th round of Patrese, who had started from eighth of a Brabham -two lead. After both Renault driver had failed, Andrea de Cesaris was from the 31st round in third place before Eddie Cheever. Since these two and the fifth-placed Derek Daly ran out of fuel just before the end of the race, eventually reached John Watson the podium. Elio de Angelis finished fourth ahead of Marc Surer and Andrea de Cesaris, who was considered a sixth due to its distance traveled.
