Qualification for Soccer World Cup 1982

For the World Cup tournament in Spain in 1982, a total of 107 associations had been reported, including

34 teams from Europe ( with host Spain, with Israel)
28 teams from Africa ( two retired )
17 teams from Asia (excluding Israel)
10 teams from South America ( with defending champion Argentina)
15 teams from North and Central America.
3 teams from Oceania

Qualified teams As defending champions Argentina and Spain were directly qualified organizers and the World Cup was held with 24 teams were available for the remaining 105 teams 22 free finals spaces are available; went away

Since Ghana and Uganda withdrew, only 103 teams participating in the World Cup qualifier, but a new World Cup record.

European Zone / UEFA

From Europe to 33 teams for the qualification for the 1982 World Cup signed up. Then there was Israel, which also participated in the European qualification. Spain was in 1982 qualified automatically as host of the World Cup. The remaining 33 teams were divided into 7 groups, six groups of 5 teams and one group of three teams. South American zone / CONMEBOL

From South America reported 10 teams. Including Argentina, world champions of the past World Cup, which qualified automatically as defending champions. The remaining nine teams were divided into three groups of three teams. The mode was a simple league system with return game. The first group of each group qualified for the World Cup 1982.

It qualified: Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Peru.

North, Central American and Caribbean Zone / CONCACAF

From North, Central America and the Caribbean, a total of 15 teams entered in the World Cup qualifiers. These were first divided into three zones (North Zone, Caribbean Zone and Central Zone). Two teams per zone qualified for the final group in the Free-for -All completed a game. The two group best qualified for this final group of six for the World Cup 1982. The final tournament took place within 21 days in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa.

African Zone / CAF

From Africa, 29 nations competed for two final places. After Ghana and Uganda had withdrawn and the Central African Republic had been excluded because the entry fee was not paid, were 26 teams left. The qualification was played in K.o system. In the first round still had six teams a bye. In round 2, Libya refused to play against Egypt, which have denied this, without a single game, came up in round 3.

It qualified: Algeria and Cameroon.

Asian zone Oceania / AFC and OFC

Qualification in Asia and Oceania was probably the most complicated qualification of the World Cup 1982. 21 teams entered the qualification, after the withdrawal of Iran, the remaining 20 teams were divided into four groups. Classification criterion was mostly geographical location. For each group, a nation qualified for a finals tournament, in which the two World Cup qualifiers were determined. The mode of each group differed significantly. In group 1, five teams played in round-trip round from a group winners, while in group 2 ( 5 teams ) and group 3 ( 4 teams ) was held a tournament in Riyadh and Kuwait City, in which each competing against each once. In group 4 ( 6 teams) was, as usual at that time in East Asia, initially preceded by a round of division games. These three games were drawn. The team with the highest win came in a group with the losers of the other two games. While the team was assigned with the highest defeat the two other winning teams. In groups of three, everyone plays against everyone once, the top two then played in the knock-out system, beginning with the semi-finals to the qualifying at the final tournament course. The finals tournament, which was held between the four group winners, was held again in the League mode with return game. Since the point and goal difference at the end between China and New Zealand was identical, the two teams had to a play-off match for the World Cup finals unsubscribe.
