Background

This weekend, for the first time joined McLaren with a turbocharged engine, and was thus according to Renault, Ferrari, Toleman, Alfa Romeo, Brabham, ATS, Lotus Spirit and the ninth of the 16 participating in the world championship team that had such a drive. Developed by Porsche, with the support of TAG V6 engine was installed in the MP4/1E by Niki Lauda.

Training

Nelson Piquet qualified for the first and only time this season for the pole position. He was followed by Patrick Tambay before Elio de Angelis and the leading in the drivers' world championship at this time Alain Prost. The third row of the grid formed Nigel Mansell Riccardo Patrese and Derek Warwick before and Andrea de Cesaris.

Marc Surer reached for Best of drivers without turbocharged engine to 14th place. Niki Lauda qualified in spite of the turbocharged engine only for the 19th position, four places behind his team-mate John Watson, who still took to the conventional Ford Cosworth engine.

Race

Eddie Cheever managed from twelfth place on the grid a very good start which brought him into second place behind Piquet and Prost before, Patrese and de Cesaris. Tambay, however, fell from the second back to the 21th rank.

After five rounds of de Cesaris retired due to an engine failure. In the same circulation Cheever was overtaken by Prost. Four laps later also attracted Patrese past the Americans. Meanwhile, by the tenth of René Arnoux started was on his way to the top. In lap 22, he took the third place of Patrese.

Shortly after the now obligatory pit stops collided in the 42nd round Prost due to a failed Überholversuchs in Tarzanbocht with the leading Piquet. While this eliminated immediately, Prost was initially able to continue with a damaged front wing, but was forced to retire shortly after. Arnoux thus attaining the lead from Patrese, Tambay and Watson.

A turbocharger damage to Patrese's car in the 70th round allowed a Ferrari one-two, which the team took first place in the Constructors' World Championship. Watson was third. The remaining points winners of the day were called Derek Warwick, Mauro Baldi and Michele Alboreto. For Warwick, as well as for the team Toleman these were the respective first championship points in Formula 1
