Background

Since the 1983 season practiced by most teams refueling during the race of the person in charge was considered too dangerous to be adopted such a ban before the new season. In addition, the maximum amount of fuel the car was limited to 220 liters per race, which noted in particular the now existing in the majority teams with power-intensive turbo engines before problems.

The teams Williams, Lotus, ATS and Arrows retained in each case the driver crews, with whom they had completed the 1983 season.

John Watson, who had speculated in late 1983 that all major drivers were contractually bound, called by McLaren team boss Ron Dennis for a raise, so this was not in agreement. As Renault surprisingly announced the separation of Alain Prost, eventually became this instead of Watson under contract, who then received no cockpit for the 1984 season. The second Renault race drivers last year, Eddie Cheever had left Renault and was new team-mate Riccardo Patrese at Alfa Romeo, where they had taken next to the former Brabham pilots also Benetton 's former main sponsor of Tyrrell under contract. Patrick Tambay and Derek Warwick were then the new Renault team driver.

Tambays former space at the side of René Arnoux at Ferrari Michele Alboreto took. Meanwhile, previous Team Tyrrell stood then with the two debutants Stefan Bellof and Martin Brundle completely new to. After addition Derek Warwick Bruno Giacomelli had to leave Toleman, also needed this team two new drivers. They opted for Johnny Cecotto and the Formula 1 rookie Ayrton Senna.

Ligier entered from then on with turbo engines from Renault. In addition, a new main sponsor and the two driver Andrea de Cesaris and François Hesnault was engaged. RAM Racing also took a change of engine supplier. They decided on four-cylinder turbo engines from Hart. As a driver Jonathan Palmer and newcomer Philippe Alliot have been contracted. Teo Fabi was new teammate of reigning world champion Nelson Piquet at Brabham.

Only Tyrrell, Williams, Arrows and Toleman disputed the season opener exclusively with cars from last year, with the Williams FW09 had been used only at the season finale in 1983 and thus represented a relatively new construction.

Training

Elio de Angelis qualified in the new Lotus 95T for the pole position in front of Michele Alboreto in the Ferrari 126C4. Derek Warwick and Alain Prost occupied the second row ahead of Nigel Mansell and Niki Lauda.

Manfred Winkelhock was disqualified because his car mechanic had pushed illegally in the box, after he was left lying on the track during the qualifying session.

Race

Due to a power failure, the first launch attempt had to be aborted. The second attempt did not succeed, as Andrea de Cesaris blocked the route due to a defective shift linkage. It was not until the third attempt was successful, with de Cesaris started from the pit lane with a T -Car.

Since de Angelis and Prost not a good start succeeded, Alboreto was after the first round before Warwick, Mansell and Lauda in the lead. Nelson Piquet stalled his engine and therefore had to rush behind the field.

Lauda overtook several consecutive opponents, with his car and the slightly touched by Warwick. In the twelfth round of the Austrians took over the lead from Warwick, Mansell, Prost and Tambay, where he benefited from a spin Alboreto. From lap 24 Prost added Lauda's McLaren guidance to a double peak. It remained until the pit stops, where due to tank ban only the tires were changed. Lauda retired during his stops convicted of an electrical problem. Prost's stop was also not without problems, so Warwick took the lead.

In the 51st round of Warwick turned off, as a suspension broke. These were a late consequence of the slight collision with Lauda at the start of the race. Tambay, who at this time was in second place, had to drive fuel-efficient and took it into account, to be overtaken by Keke Rosberg. Nevertheless, he remained lying on an empty tank two rounds before the end of the race. Thus Prost won ahead of Rosberg and de Angelis. Cheever and Brundle took places four and five. Tambay was considered a sixth due to its distance traveled.

As the Tyrrell team was eliminated late in the season of the World Cup, moved all the pilots who had reached the goal after Martin Brundle to a place on. Thus subsequently Thierry Boutsen won a world championship point.
