Background

The Grand Prix of the Netherlands took place a week after the race in Austria. In contrast to this abandoned ATS this time it put a second car.

Training

Alain Prost, who had lost his lead in the championship the weekend before his McLaren team-mate Niki Lauda, the pole position secured before the still reigning world champion Nelson Piquet in a Brabham. He was followed by Lotus driver Elio de Angelis before the two Renaults of Derek Warwick Patrick Tambay and Lauda as well as to position six. The two Williams team mate Keke Rosberg and Jacques Laffite were the fourth row.

Since exceptionally 27 instead of the otherwise mostly 26 participants were admitted to all pilots who completed the training were able to qualify for the race.

Race

Piquet was able to overtake Prost shortly after the start, and thus to take the lead before this and Tambay, de Angelis and Rosberg. Until the fifth lap, Rosberg battled to third place forward. Lauda, ​​who was initially dropped by a modest start in ninth place, also quickly made up places and took in the ninth round, a fourth.

As the leader in the eleventh round Piquet retired due to an engine failure, Lauda was briefly in third place behind Prost and Rosberg henceforth leading. Already a lap later he overtook Rosberg, however, and thus established a McLaren - double leadership that lasted until the finish.

During the rounds of 52 and 53 succeeded Nigel Mansell to overtake his team mate Elio de Angelis and Keke Rosberg and to take third place. Since Rosberg went out with three laps of fuel, de Angelis finished fourth ahead of Teo Fabi and Patrick Tambay.

Although three World Championship races were to be completed, McLaren was due to the new double victory firmly as the winner of the world championship title of the designers. It was the second world title the team's history after the first success in 1974.
