Background
Stefan Bellof missed his home Grand Prix, as he had to attend a sports car race at the Mosport International Raceway in Canada due to contractual obligations to Porsche. Mike Thackwell then took over in Hockenheim Tyrrell cockpit of the Germans, but missed the qualification.
Due to a limited at this time existing number of replacement chassis, it was decided to run for Ayrton Senna in the Toleman, for the time being not to replace the injured Johnny Cecotto, but with only one car.
Training
The leading in the world championship standings Alain Prost qualified on pole position in front of Elio de Angelis and the two Renault drivers Derek Warwick Patrick Tambay and. Nelson Piquet formed, along with Michele Alboreto the third row in front of Niki Lauda and Teo Fabi.
Race
De Angelis was able to take over the lead from Prost, Piquet and the two Renault drivers Warwick and Tambay shortly after the start. Behind Senna followed in sixth place. As in the sixth round part of the tail fairing broke on his car and the rear wing damaged, this resulted in an accident at high speed, the Basilian but unhurt survived.
After de Angelis was excreted in the eighth round due to an engine failure, Prost took over only the lead briefly, as he was overtaken in the same round of Piquet. Lauda was now in third place. He was followed by Keke Rosberg, who had worked by starting from 19th in the first nine rounds forward. However, in round ten, he left due to an electrical defect, and had the fourth Derek Warwick left.
As Piquet lap 23 had to retire due to a gearbox failure, he left behind a McLaren - double leadership that remained from then on to the finish. Derek Warwick was third ahead of Nigel Mansell, Patrick Tambay and Arnoux.
