1984 UEFA European Under-21 Championship

At the U -21 Football Championship in 1984, 30 teams participating.

The qualifying matches in the eight qualifying groups were started on 1 May 1982 and completed on 21 December 1983. The quarter-final was in the period from 28 February to 11 April 1984, the semi-final was held in the period 18 April to 2 May 1984. The finals for the title took place on 17 and on 24 May 1984, with England prevailed against Spain with a total score of 2:1 and his European title in 1982, the second was successful overall defend.

Mode

The 30 teams were in eight groups - six groups of four and two groups of three teams - solved. The national selections had to work through their encounters with return game. The group winners ( marked in yellow ) were qualified for the quarter-finals, was played in from the return game in the knock-out system until the final.

Cutting off the German teams

Germany and Austria

In Group 6 Germany and Austria met on Albania and Turkey. Austria had to concede defeat with 1:2 in the very first game in Miirzzuschlag against Albania and came in Hollabrunn against Turkey, a 1-1 not get out. Slightly better, Germany launched that played a 1-1 draw in Albania and won 1-0 in Turkey. In the direct duels there were in St. Pölten a 1-1 draw and a 2-1 home win in Arnsberg Germany. For the Austrians followed in Albania with 0:3 and 0:5 in Turkey with severe setbacks. Germany remained a 7-0 drubbing in Berlin on Turkey in the race to win the group. For this purpose, however, a victory would have been necessary in the last game in Trier. Germany had to settle for a 1-1 draw and had to Albania sensationally left the group.

East Germany and Switzerland

The GDR and Switzerland met in group 1 on Belgium and Scotland. A 0-0 draw to kick off in Belgium remained the only point winning the Swiss in this group, so they took the last place. Things went better for the GDR, which not only both games against Switzerland - could win, but also in white rock against Belgium won 2:1 - 6:5 and 2:1 in Biel in Brandenburg. Due to a 0-2 defeat in Edinburgh and a 1-1 draw in the return match in Jena, the GDR had to ultimately settle behind Scotland with the group space.
