Background

After Manfred Winkelhock had come on the weekend, which was in Austria between the Grand Prix of Germany and the eleventh World Championship race of the year, in a sports car race at Mosport Park died, he was at RAM Racing replaced by Kenny Acheson.

Twelve laps before the end of the race Lauda retired from damage due to a turbocharger, so Prost won ahead of Senna and Alboreto. Stefan Johansson, Elio de Angelis and Marc Surer reached the positions four through six.
