Background

The field corresponded exactly to that of the French Grand Prix two weeks earlier.

In addition to Patrick Tambay and Derek Warwick has now been equipped with the advanced Renault RE60B.

Eddie Cheever resorted to a more advanced version of the Alfa Romeo 184T from the previous year, as the 185T had done in the first half of the season as not competitive.

Training

Keke Rosberg was the first pilot, who completed a round with an average speed of over 160 mph on the 4.719 km long high speed track. He qualified for the pole position ahead of Nelson Piquet, Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna. The third row of the grid was formed by Nigel Mansell and the leading in the drivers' world championship Michele Alboreto.

22 of the 26 drivers completed their fastest practice laps with average speeds over 240 km / h and the fastest 11 even with more than 250 km / h

Race

A very good start Senna brought before Rosberg, Mansell and Prost in the lead. Behind Andrea de Cesaris was followed by the second place from Nelson Piquet started on the sixth.

In the first curve Stefan Johansson collided with Patrick Tambay. This led to a further collision between Piercarlo Ghinzani and Philippe Alliot. For all four participating pilot the race was thus terminated, Johansson was the only still able to complete the path to his box.

Until the fifth round of de Cesaris fought Prost and Mansell passed on to third place. In the ninth round drew cheers, who had recently happened Mansell, back to de Cesaris over. As Rosberg on lap 16 had to retire due to a turbocharger damage, Prost got to second place.

From lap 22 Niki Lauda was in third place behind Senna and Prost rapidly catching up on this. Lauda retired on lap 58 due to a defect electrics, so Alboreto could take the third place. In the same lap Prost took the lead, since Senna struggled with engine problems. Although the Brazilian was able to counter spontaneously, but retired on lap 60 due to lack of fuel.

Alain Prost won with a lap ahead of Michele Alboreto and Jacques Laffite, who had overtaken four laps to Nelson Piquet. Derek Warwick and Marc Surer reached the fifth and sixth.
